Each pair starts as one length of hinoki wood. We shape it, sand it, then carve the name you send us into the grain. The lacquer goes on last, in a thin coat that settles into the letters. This is not a set for a drawer full of spares. It is one pair, made for one person, meant to be picked up every day. The wood ages with use. The name stays.

Selecting the wood

We choose straight-grain hinoki with no knots.

Shaping

Each stick is cut and tapered by hand tools.

Engraving

The name is carved slowly into the surface.

Sealing

A thin urushi coat is brushed on and left to cure.

Yes, hinoki stays pale and natural. Walnut and ebony versions run darker.
