From wood block to a child's pair
Wood is cut
A hinoki block is cut to a shorter child length.
Shaping
Each stick is tapered and sanded for a smaller grip.
Engraving
The child's name is cut into the wood along one side.
Sealing
A thin urushi coat is applied near the tip and left to cure.
Nozomi Kato
I sand the shorter pairs a little more at the grip. A child's hand needs a smoother surface than an adult's.
